Let's Make an Arrangement

Antique store still life...

Last week, during class, I gave my students a coloring contest for a Cezanne still life. We started comparing Cezanne to Rodin, as key figures who ushered in a more modern representation of form. And, we talked about how when you're poor, and you can't afford models, you are inspired by what you have around you. Monet's fish, will be dinner later. Cezanne studied the color of the fruit, and then probably consumed it.

Yesterday, I took a walk around an antique store, while out running errands. There was one booth, in particular, which had a great variety of textures. There were metal spoons, glass bottles, wooden boxes, and paper tags. Such a variety of shapes and sizes... There was sort of a "Eureka!" moment, when I realized that we are surrounded by still lifes.

This morning, when I woke up and headed into the bathroom, I started seeing the still lifes around my house. Maybe I need to get down to business, and start drawing or painting them. Or, making them out of clay...
